A Data-Driven Approach to Improving the Use of Secondary Prevention Services for Chronic Kidney Disease in Peru
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 16-18% of Peru’s population, with rising mortality particularly in populations that live outside the capital. This proposed project will include two objectives. First, we will use a national health insurance database and machine learning techniques to quantify geographic disparities in access to CKD preventive therapies and CKD outcomes. Second, we will use these data to conduct a distributional cost-effectiveness analysis of incorporating sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) into Peru’s Renal Healthcare Program. Insights into regional variations in CKD care and the potential cost and impact of SGLT2i can help inform resource allocation decisions and evidence-based policies to strengthen CKD prevention efforts in Peru and countries with similar challenges.
Research Significance
This study will provide a better understanding of the socio-demographic dimensions of CKD in Lima and its differential burden on its health system. Importantly, it will provide timely evidence to the ministry of health and national insurance authority on the potential cost-effectiveness of SGLT2i therapies, which are a novel and potentially impactful strategy for CKD secondary prevention. The approach developed here could be used to evaluate other preventive strategies for CKD and other chronic diseases.
