Genetic factors associated with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
Stroke, both ischemic and hemorrhagic, are one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. Despite their strong environmental influences, both disorders are also influenced by genetic factors that might be potential therapeutic targets by themselves or contribute on farmacogenomic strategies for precision medicine for stroke in a near future. We will study the genetic factors associated with both types of stroke, using admixture mapping, an approach that takes advantage of recent admixture to map genetic loci whose continental ancestry correlates with risk ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.
Research Significance
Studying stroke in admixed Peruvian Latino population, will narrow the gap of knowledge when dealing with non-Caucasian communities, opening a bigger window for discovery of novel variants of clinical significance and potential future use on therapeutics targets.
