Research Project
Enhancing Breast Cancer Survivability Through Screening in Peru
Anya Romanoff will utilize the Fulbright-Fogarty Postdoctoral Award in Public Health to address global disparities in women’s access to breast cancer screening and treatment.
Research Significance
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide and in Latin America its incidence is increasing. In contrast to the US where breast cancer is often detected at an early treatable stage, in developing countries it is frequently diagnosed when already metastatic. Despite advances in screening, diagnosis, and treatment, education remains a major hurdle to breast cancer management.
This project will comprehensively evaluate breast cancer screening and barriers to its use in Huancayo, Peru. Education will be provided to health care workers and patients to improve screening utilization and treatment. A goal of this project is to provide a model by which other developing countries can raise awareness and improve breast cancer detection and, in turn, survival.
