Integrating hypertension and diabetes screening and management with HIV care services for older adults: Feasibility study
Due to HIV infection, persons aged 50 years and above have an increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases when compared to their HIV uninfected counterparts. HIV-NCD comorbidity is associated with poor health outcomes, increased utilization of healthcare services and associated costs. Lack of a platform that integrates HIV and NCDs services presents a missed opportunity to screen and manage NCDs in older adults living with HIV (OALWH) who are at a high risk of significant morbidity and mortality.
Research Significance
While the infrastructure for HIV care has received unprecedented support in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), resources to care for the growing burden of NCDs lags behind. Leveraging the HIV care infrastructure to support early identification and management of hypertension and diabetes will avert mortality and morbidity, and potentially reduce healthcare costs and pill burden for OALWH
