All India Institute of Medical Sciences
The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous public medical colleges of higher education, including institutions in New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh. Additional AIIMS institutes are planned, and combined they radically increase the number of physicians being trained in India. AIIMS Delhi, the oldest and flagship AIIMS institute, is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in India and is well regarded globally, with 49 different departments and divisions providing care across a wide spectrum of specialties. UMMS faculty have made several visits to AIIMS over the past few years, with a particular focus on trauma care, and a Memorandum of Understanding with AIIMS was signed in 2011. In 2014, six UM faculty traveled to AIMMS to participate in a one-week, intensive course in research methodology designed to foster bi-directional collaboration. More than 50 junior faculty from across India participated in the workshop. In addition, UM faculty Dr. Krishnan Raghavendran and Venkatakrishna Rajajee worked with partners at AIIMS to obtain a two-year grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, with co-support from the Ministry of Health in India, to evaluate the use of ultrasound to measure optic nerve sheath diameter in patients with severe traumatic brain injury in India. The founding principle of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was to “keep noble ideas in mind and provide accessibility to students from weaker sections of society”. School of Biotechnology (SBT) in JNU, an outstanding research and teaching center, offers MS and PhD research programs in Biotechnology and keeps attracting top rank students from all over India. The SBT has a common Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) and a specialized research facility known as Advanced Instrumentation Research Facility (AIRF), which consists of more than 21 sophisticated state-of-the-art instruments and a BSL-3 facility. Dr. Ravi Tandon from SBT, JNU conducts HIV research and has published his findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with Dr. Lishomwa Ndhlovu of the Hawaii Center for AIDS, University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), and continues to collaborate with him. Currently, Dr. Tandon’s research focuses on HIV-H.pylori co-infection in collaboration with Dr. Rupesh Chaturvedi (JNU) where they are working on finding novel approaches to exploit H.pylori in the eradication of HIV reservoir. His other research projects include the study of gut microbiota and their potential role in inflammation during suppressive antiretroviral therapy in perinatally HIV-infected children. Dr. Tandon currently hosts students from UHM in his laboratory at JNU to conduct research on HIV. Read more…
